Like bad shoes, Pornography is everywhere.

It’s routinely piped into television sets in motels and hotels across America. According to a recent Pew Internet study, the most popular online destinations for the whole of the world wide web are sex sites surpassing sports sites, gambling sites, shopping portals and Instant Messaging. It’s accessible through PDA’s, cellphones and chatlines. It can found in magazines at local bookstores. Porn can be purchased, rented, streamed and downloaded. And, according to Adult Video News (AVN), it’s a twelve billion dollar a year industry in the U.S. alone – nearly double the revenue of ABC, CBS and NBC combined.
And all I can say is Thank God!

Now, I have a lot to be thankful for. I don’t stutter or dribble. I have all my limbs, hair and teeth. And I’ve never spent a night in a Mexican jail. (This, if you knew me, wouldn’t exactly be the end of the world.) But mostly I thank God that the Adult Entertainment industry is thriving because it is a testament to the sexual health of our nation. That despite the theocrats and their minions, pornography is as big, as diverse, as ubiquitous and as curious an entity as ever. After all, if the self-appointed guardians of sexual morality had their way this world would be a little sadder, more neurotic and, in a cruel twist of irony, certainly a more dangerous place to live.
Of course, it would also mean I wouldn’t be fortunate enough to be writing weekly posts on Porn and Society for Treasure Island Media. So, won’t you please join me here each week as we examine Pornography in all its permutations? At least you can now say you come to our site for the articles.
